{Soul Searching} ~Beeswax & Coconut Oil body lotion DIY~

It's day 15...or 16? of my 31days of Soul Searching Challenge! The time has flown by so far and I am happy to say I have been keeping busy with lots of projects around the house. One thing I had always wanted to try was making my own beauty products at home, so I decided to give it a go! I whipped up a batch of homemade lotion ...what a process!

I must admit the results surprised me... a rich, creamy, and most importantly -all natural- lotion that lasted me a few weeks...from my own kitchen and on the cheap! I look forward to tweaking the recipe over time, if I want to play with scents and varieties, but this was a good start!

 Here's how I did it~

Beeswax & Coconut Oil body lotion:

I must admit the results surprised me... a rich, creamy, and most importantly -all natural- lotion that lasted me a few weeks...from my own kitchen and on the cheap! I look forward to tweaking the recipe over time, if I want to play with scents and varieties, but this was a good start!

Here are the D.I.Y. steps below:
 yields approx. 2c lotion

2 tbsp beeswax, grated*
2tbsp coconut oil
2tsp grape seed oil
1tsp rose petal witch hazel**
2tsp purified water

* DO NOT use the same grater you use for food... this wax is stubborn as all ___ and will not come off... I recommend buying a second, sturdy grater for this purpose.
** balances and tones skin, but omit of you have extremely sensitive skin. It took mine about 2 days to adjust to it.

1. place the grated wax into a pyrex or glass bowl. Place the pyrex in a large pot filled with about 2qts of boiling water... basically, you're creating a double-boiler so your wax doesn't burn.

2. Stir wax evenly until melted (transparent) through.

3. Remove from heat. Add coconut and grape seed oils (zap them for a few seconds in the microwave so they're hot...if they're colder than the wax, it will cause the wax to re-harden.

4. Whisk well for about 5 minutes until creamy.*** It will harden as it starts to cool. Check mixture often to make sure it's not too hard or soft. If too hard, slowly add more oils, if too soft, you will have to melt more wax in the microwave, and heat the lotion, then combine.
(tedious, I know! But worth it if you find the right combo... just be sure to write down your recipe so you can recreate easily in the future)

*** This step is when you want to add your fragrance if using any (I didn't this time because I wanted to see how the base mixture smelled by itself- based on this, I would recommend scenting with honey, shea, cocoa, vanilla, and floral tones)

5. While warm, pour mix into a glass jar with a lid. Let lotion cool for about 45mins-1hr before using. Store in a cool place (like a bathroom cabinet) and use within 3weeks.

Dry feet? Smooth on and cover with cotton socks before bed. Need a deep-conditioning hair treatment? Smooth on for 5-10 mins, rinse out with baking soda and apple-cider vinegar.
enjoy!
