Orange Clove Mulling Spice Sachets

I made these last year as part of our "perishable" Christmas gifts for our families. They are so simple to make and can be reused to fill your home with delicious holiday scents all season long!
I picked up everything I needed in the bulk-spices section at the store and already had some ribbon and cheesecloth on hand. I tucked 3-4 sachets into glass jars with a piece of fabric over the top and tied with a tag for a cute presentation.

If you're looking for something simple to give along with that box of chocolates or a little homemade gift for teachers, neighbors, or friends- you can have these ready to give in no time.

*Orange Clove Mulling Spice Sachets*

What you need:
(makes 8 sachets)

8 whole cinnamon sticks
2 tsp whole cloves
2 tsp whole allspice berries
8 whole nutmeg cloves
Peel/zest of one large orange
(I also used some dried apple peel I had left over from another recipe)

What you do:
1. In a toaster oven or conventional oven, place orange peel on a baking sheet and roast at 350' for 10 minutes (this will help preserve them)
2. Cut cheesecloth into 4'' squares.
3. Place 1 cinnamon stick, a pinch of orange peel, and equal parts of each spice (1/8th) in center of each square.
4. Pull all corners together and tie with ribbon.
5. Package in glass jars or cute tins.

To use:
Simply place a sachet in a full pot of boiling water and simmer on very low heat for an hour (keeping an eye on water level so sachet does not burn)
- Can be dried and reused 5-6 times, or until scent fades-
* * add to your coffee pot, hot cocoa, or cider for delicious, spice-infused drink!* *

here is a great recipe for mulled wine- we'll definitely be serving this up Christmas Eve!
